Refuse to Be Anything You Don't Want to Be

Sometimes it's difficult to be anything but cookie cutter in today's world.

It's not exactly simple to stand out from the crowd, to rise above sea-level and to be something great. However, just because it's not simple does not mean it's impossible. In fact, it should be something you desire even more because it's difficult.

The harder you work for something, the more rewarding it is when you get it in the end. Think back to a time when you wanted something that seemed unobtainable or a time when you wanted to do or be something that you never thought you could do or be. But then you set out, and you did it or got it. Think long and hard.

Was it easy?
Did it take you a few hours or days?
Were you able to sit back and watch it happen?

The answers to those questions is, more likely than not, a big, resounding "No."

And there's a reason that your answers were no. The big breaks in life rarely come easily. They don't just stroll through your front door on a silver platter. They  don't come to you while your sleeping, watching TV, or posting on Facebook for the fourth time in a day.

The big breaks in life come when you put some elbow grease into it, when you get down and dirty, when you work hard, sweat and put all of your time and effort into getting what you want.

So don't settle for less than you deserve. Refuse to be anything you don't want to be. It might be hard to change. It might be scary. It might be a long process. But in the end, you'll be happier for it. Instead of settling for what is simply good enough, go for what you truly deserve and desire.

When was a time when you worked hard and got what you wanted? Was the process difficult? Was the result rewarding? Share you story in a comment!

  1. This is one of the hardest thing to do. It's really hard to say to. You don't want to be submissive but you don't want to disappoint others as well.

I'm currently reading Something More: Excavating Your Authentic Self by Sarah Ban Breathnach. Somehow, it's helping. Will try to make a post about this.

  2. Thanks for sharing Katrina. I completely agree with you. It is one of the hardest things to do. I've been struggling with it a lot recently since I've moved back to the States from Rome. It's been difficult transitioning while still attempting to be true to myself.

Thanks for sharing the book title, as well. I'm definitely going to look into it!

  3. I absolutely love this post - it can make people really think and realize if they are really "settling". I have a health condition and I REFUSE to let it take me down & conform me into a person that I don't want to be..

It is hard. This type of thing for anyone is hard. But life is a challenge - regardless in how each persons challenge is displayed.

Even though I am burdened by a illness, it only has made me a stronger person who truly appreciates the simple things in life.

    I ♥ your blog

  4. Thank you for this. I needed to hear it. It's funny because the things we want change over time and it is easy to get distracted as to the means of acquiring the prize. I think today, I want a little more peace. So, off the computer and into a room with less distraction for a little time with my Bible. It's worth the "sacrifice" to spend time reading and calm my nerves, rather than letting life just happen to me. Thanks. Have a great day!

  5. Thanks so much for sharing, Erin! What a beautiful thing that you're still challenging yourself and refusing to conform just because of life's road bumps. It shows how strong of a person you really are when you don't let things like illness, finances, breakups, arguments, or any other "bad" things get you down. So kudos to you and your strength!

I look forward to seeing you around!

  6. Thanks, Jackie! I agree, sometimes we need to let ourselves get away from the "distractions" and get into what life is really about--living! And it's wonderful that everyone has their own ways of calming their nerves and learning to live a little more simply. Thanks so much for sharing :-)
